Seniors in Ladysmith and their caregivers say they are concerned about continuity of care and cost of living expenses when it comes to today’s aging population.

Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder and Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley gathered with approximately 30 local residents on Friday as part of a series of non-partisan roundtables Crowder is hosting to identify and address issues and priorities that will help communities best prepare for the growing seniors population.

For many decades, the right to federal pensions for seniors has been a motherhood issue for Canadians.

And Prime Minister Harper's announcement last month that the government plans to raise the age of eligibility for Old Age Security from 65 to 67 immediately raised a red flag  for Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder.

She's been quick to point out that decreasing income for seniors raises the spectre of increased poverty for some seniors and reduction in employment for boomers.

Seniors health care, in its various guises, was a hot topic at Jean Crowder's seniors forum at Lake Cowichan Feb. 11.

A good crowd of west Cowichan politicians, business owners and other movers and shakers came out for the 10 a.m. session in the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

The Nanaimo-Cowichan MP didn't attempt to guide the meeting with a long pre-amble; instead she gave a quick rundown of the sorts of comments her office has been hearing and then threw the session open to hear what people had on their minds.
