Ms. Jean Crowder (Nanaimo—Cowichan, NDP): Mr. Speaker, that sounds like the dog ate my homework excuse.

The department's nominal role process for first nations students is usually complete in February. It is now June and the school year is almost over. The department has been forced to send letters to school boards asking them not to charge interest to first nations for tuition. If this were not so serious, it would be just plain embarrassing.

Why is this process still not complete?

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member for Western Arctic for his input on this piece of legislation and, of course, for the great work that he does on the aboriginal affairs committee.

Jean Crowder, Nanaimo—Cowichan:

Mr. Speaker, we hoped the minister would mark the fifth anniversary of the residential school apology in a more meaningful way than cuts to organizations.

Jean Crowder, Nanaimo—Cowichan:

Mr. Speaker, we hope the minister will actually follow through with his commitments, because there is a lack of trust that they will see those kinds of results.

This Conservative government promised a new relationship with aboriginal peoples, but it was all just empty words.
