The Cowichan Green Community hosted the successful Seeds for Change Conference which united the community in taking a stand against GMOs. I was pleased to speak at the conference about food safety, GMO labelling, and the role of the federal government. I was also glad to serve on the panel for the very good questions asked by the audience.

Many people at the conference were interested in some of the statistics and references that I brought up in my speech:

The federal long-gun registry couldn't be scrapped soon enough for Nanaimo hunter Joseph Michaels.

Like many gun owners, he sees it as a waste of gunowners' and taxpayer money. Legislation to end the registry was passed in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The registry was introduced under the Liberals amid public outrage at the student massacre at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989.

It is time for local employers to apply for funding under the Canada Summer Jobs program.

The application period is from Feb. 1 to Feb. 29.

Applications can be made online or submit-ted in person at the Cowichan Service Canada Centre, 211 Jubilee St. in Duncan.

The goal of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to provide work experience for students in their local community.

Seniors health care, in its various guises, was a hot topic at Jean Crowder's seniors forum at Lake Cowichan Feb. 11.

A good crowd of west Cowichan politicians, business owners and other movers and shakers came out for the 10 a.m. session in the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

The Nanaimo-Cowichan MP didn't attempt to guide the meeting with a long pre-amble; instead she gave a quick rundown of the sorts of comments her office has been hearing and then threw the session open to hear what people had on their minds.

Opposition forces seem poised to make a push for reform in Canada’s marijuana laws.

But no one’s expecting the federal government to respond any time soon.

The federal Liberals recently adopted cannabis legalization as an official party policy, while that, or decriminalization, has the support of most federal NDP leadership candidates.

But former Cowichan Tory hopeful John Kory doubted dope would be legalized by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s current Conservative government.
