Wed 24 Mar 2010

Our service men and women are some of this countries greatest heroes. This November I would like to highlight the stories of our local veterans in my annual newsletter. If you would like to nominate a veteran whose story you would like to see highlighted in the newsletter, please contact me at jean@jeancrowder.ca. Or, you can tell me the story of a veteran in our community, whether they fought in the World Wars or Korea, or are a new veteran from our peacekeeping activities or the war in Afghanistan.

Powerful emotions overcame David Munro as he carried the Olympic flame through Hope on Sunday.

Munro is a Canadian Armed Forces veteran who lived in Nanaimo for several years. He wept as he ran through the Fraser Valley town.

The 73-year-old man was overcome by thoughts of soldiers lost while he served as a United Nations peacekeeper in international hotspots such as the Suez Canal, the Sinai Desert and the Gaza Strip.

Deaths reignite debate over Canadian mission; Mission divides nation, citizens
Nanaimo's Marjorie Stewart wants Canada's 2,500 troops out of Afghanistan as soon as possible.
She's not alone. Sixty-seven Canadians have been killed since deploying to Afghanistan in 2002, including six killed by a roadside bomb on Wednesday.
The shock of so many Canadian casualties on foreign soil hits hard for a generation that isn't used to such losses in the name of military strategy.

Dear Editor:

Re: Al Siebring, 'Layton's NDP supporting Harper's war,' May 4.

What is clear from his recent column is that Al Siebring thinks the NDP should have voted to keep Canadian troops fighting in Afghanistan until 2009. The NDP disagrees with keeping our brave Canadian Forces in an ill-defined mission until 2009 and could not support any motion that would.

Ms. Jean Crowder (Nanaimo—Cowichan, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, I will be splitting my time with the member for Vancouver East.

Tue 19 Dec 2006

Ms. Jean Crowder (Nanaimo—Cowichan, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to speak to the motion. I want to thank the member for Sault Ste. Marie for sharing his time with me and for very ably outlining some of the issues facing veterans. I must thank the member for Sackville—Eastern Shore for his tireless work on behalf of veterans and their families.
